The VZ61 Škorpion, officially designated Samopal vzor 61 (“submachine gun model 1961”), is an iconic Cold War-era machine pistol developed in Czechoslovakia by designer Miroslav Rybář (1924–1970). Conceived in 1959 as a compact personal defense weapon (PDW), the Škorpion was intended to bridge the gap between a traditional pistol and a submachine gun, providing enhanced firepower for non-combat personnel while maintaining concealability. The project, initially codenamed “Model 59,” was finalized in 1961 and produced by Česká Zbrojovka (CZ) in Uherský Brod from 1963 to 1979, with approximately 210,000 units manufactured.
